Authorisation for purchase of Members' Apple Iphones

Decision Maker: Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Planning

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: Yes

To consider the purchase of Apple iPhones as a devise for Members.

To agree to the purchase of 49 Apple iPhone 6S 32Gb devices at a total cost of £12,209 for issue to new and re-elected members.  (However not all Members will require an iPhone; the likely requirement will be for 32 devices at a cost of £7,973.44).

To agree the difference in funding required between the originally budgeted Android smart phone for members (indicative pricing based on Motorola E5) and the preferred Apple iPhone 6S at a total cost difference of £9,514.33 for 49 devices (or £6,213.44 for 32 devices).

Final costs will be determined only at the time of the hardware procurement exercise; the above figures may therefore be subject to some minor adjustment.

Reasons for the decision:

Members are currently issued with a Windows smart phone, in addition to a laptop to perform their duties as a district councillor.

Ahead of this years’ District council election, the Members’ ICT working group reviewed a number of device options for the coming four-year term and chose to replace their Windows laptops with an Apple iPad (using iOS operating system).

For a simple and consistent user experience, they have indicated their preference for an Apple iPhone (using the same iOS operating system) rather than an Android smartphone.

Alternative options considered:

1.     To agree to the funding to purchase Apple iPhones for Members.

2.     To not agree to the funding.
